🔎 Copolymer – Definition and Explanations

Introduction

A copolymer is a polymer resulting from the copolymerization of at least two types of monomer, chemically different, called comonomers. It is therefore formed of at least two repeating patterns. The term copolymer (A copolymer is a polymer resulting from the copolymerization of at least two types of…) opposed to homopolymer.

The advantage of copolymers lies in their physico-chemical and mechanical properties which are intermediate with those obtained on the corresponding homopolymers.

Random, alternating and statistical (Statistics is both a formal science, a method and a technique. It…) are materials (A material is a material of natural or artificial origin that man shapes to…) homogeneous. It is different with block copolymers (also called block copolymers). blocks): due to their heterogeneous structure, it is possible to observe at least two Tg.

Classification

Depending on how the repeating units are distributed in the macromolecular chains, the copolymers can be classified into two families.

Copolymers with homogeneous structure

These copolymers include only one phase (The word phase can have several meanings, it is used in several fields and…) amorphous and therefore do not form microstructures. They present only one temperature (Temperature is a physical quantity measured using a thermometer and…) glass transition (Tg), which is intermediate to that found with each of the corresponding homopolymers. This type of copolymer can be:

  • random: made up of macromolecules in which the probability (Probability (from the Latin probabilitas) is an assessment of the probable character of a…) to find a monomer unit data (In information technologies, a datum is an elementary description,…) in one point (graphics) given chain (The word chain can have several meanings:) is independent of the nature of the adjacent units:
-AABBAAABAABBABAAABAAA-BB- ;
  • alternating: made up of macromolecules comprising two kinds of monomer units distributed alternately:
-ABABABABAB-, or (-AB-)not ;
  • statistical: made up of macromolecules in which the distribution of monomer units obeys known statistical laws.

Copolymers with heterogeneous structure

These copolymers are derived from grafting onto a homopolymer or from radiation (Radiation, synonymous with radiation in physics, designates the process of emission or…) of a homopolymer, of chains of at least one other homopolymer. These copolymers include at least two amorphous or crystalline phases and therefore form microstructures. It is possible to observe at least two glass transition temperatures, identical to those measured on the corresponding homopolymers. We distinguish the copolymers:

  • sequenced (to blocks):
-AAAAAAABBBBBBAAAAAAA-BB-… ;
-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-.

Examples

The national swimming center of beijing (Beijing (or Beijing) (??; pinyin: B?ij?ng Listen to the pronunciation…) is an example of construction using a copolymer. Its thin outer panels, solid and non-flammable, are made of ETFE.

Copolymers are very numerous and are widely used in industry as well as in the life (Life is the name given 🙂 of all the days (The day or the day is the interval which separates the sunrise from the sunset; it is the…). They are divided among:

  • thermoplastic polymers: PEBDL (or acronym LLDPE in English) (from the family of polyolefins); high impact polystyrene (SB) (styrene-butadiene block copolymer), EVA (ethylene/vinyl acetate), terpolymer ABS (ABS is an acronym that stands for:), SANETFE (ethylene/tetrafluoroethylene alternating copolymer), perfluoroalkoxy (Teflon-PFA);
  • elastomers: SBR (mainly contains butadiene), NBRpolyisobutylene (PIB), EPM (random copolymer), EPDM;
  • thermoplastic elastomers (TPE): SBS, SEBS, TPE-U (urethane base), TPE-E (ester base), PEBA (or polyether block amideether-amide base) which is obtained by polycondensation of a polyamide terminated carboxylic acid (The term carboxylic acid designates a molecule comprising a carboxyl group…) (PA6, PA11, PA12) with an alcohol terminated polyether (PTMG, PEG).
