A copolymer is a polymer resulting from the copolymerization of at least two types of monomer, chemically different, called comonomers. It is therefore formed of at least two repeating patterns. The advantage of copolymers lies in their physico-chemical and mechanical properties which are intermediate with those obtained on the corresponding homopolymers.

Copolymers with homogeneous structure

Copolymers with heterogeneous structure
These copolymers are derived from grafting onto a homopolymer or from radiation (Radiation, synonymous with radiation in physics, designates the process of emission or…) of a homopolymer, of chains of at least one other homopolymer. These copolymers include at least two amorphous or crystalline phases and therefore form microstructures. It is possible to observe at least two glass transition temperatures, identical to those measured on the corresponding homopolymers. We distinguish the copolymers:
- sequenced (to blocks):
- -AAAAAAABBBBBBAAAAAAA-BB-… ;

- thermoplastic polymers: PEBDL (or acronym LLDPE in English) (from the family of polyolefins); high impact polystyrene (SB) (styrene-butadiene block copolymer), EVA (ethylene/vinyl acetate), terpolymer ABS (ABS is an acronym that stands for:), SANETFE (ethylene/tetrafluoroethylene alternating copolymer), perfluoroalkoxy (Teflon-PFA);
- elastomers: SBR (mainly contains butadiene), NBRpolyisobutylene (PIB), EPM (random copolymer), EPDM;
- thermoplastic elastomers (TPE): SBS, SEBS, TPE-U (urethane base), TPE-E (ester base), PEBA (or polyether block amideether-amide base) which is obtained by polycondensation of a polyamide terminated carboxylic acid (The term carboxylic acid designates a molecule comprising a carboxyl group…) (PA6, PA11, PA12) with an alcohol terminated polyether (PTMG, PEG).
