74% of Ethereum Nodes “Ready to Merge” Before Bellatrix Upgrade | Cryptocurrency

The need to update Ethereum clients comes as the Bellatrix upgrade is configured to allow the Beacon chain to execute transactions.

Up to 73.5% of Ethereum nodes are now marked as “merge-ready” ahead of Bellatrix’s next upgrade for Ethereum on September 6, according to data from Ethernodes.

The Bellatrix upgrade is seen as one of the last steps needed before the official merger, which will see Ethereum transition to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism between September 10 and September 20.

To be ready for the merger, Ethereum node operators must comply with Bellatrix’s upgrade by updating its consensus layer clients before epoch 144896 on the Beacon Chain, which is expected to take place at 11:34 a.m. 47 s UTC on September 6, 2022, according to the Ethereum Foundation.

However, with up to 26.7% of nodes marked “not ready” for the Ethereum merger, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and lead developer Tim Beiko took to Twitter to urge the remaining node operators to update their customers.

According to the Ethereum Foundation, node operators that do not upgrade before Bellatrix upgrade will cause Ethereum clients to “synchronize with the pre-fork blockchain”, warning:

[Node operators]will be stuck on an incompatible chain following the old rules and will not be able to send Ether or operate on the Post-Merge Ethereum network.

According to Ethernodes, most “not ready” nodes are on the geth client, which has not yet upgraded to geth v1.10.23 or higher.

Other Ethereum clients that require an update include Erigon, Besu, and Nethermind.

Ethereum nodes are required to validate blocks and can be run by different Ethereum client software which varies according to the programming language used and the code base.

Following the Bellatrix upgrade, the final part of the Ethereum merger will occur in what is known as the “Paris Event”, which will be triggered when the Total Terminal Difficulty (TTD) reaches 5875000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 occur around September 15.

Once the execution layer passes this TTD, the next block will be produced by a Beacon Chain validator. The completion of this block will mark the full transition of the Ethereum blockchain to the proof-of-stake mechanism.

According to the Ethereum Foundation, Ethereum users have nothing to do with their ETH and Ethereum-based assets during the merger, but should be on the lookout for scams that suggest otherwise.
