Given this budget, and future traffic restrictions for diesel models, we have voluntarily favored petrol engines, which are less affected by them, and which, moreover, generally have fewer kilometers than diesels.
We have also defined several “vacationer” profiles, in order to orient towards suitable models.
You go with two
A romantic vacation, the best! But no need to think big, especially since the purchase price may explode if you opt for a large vehicle. A city car, preferably five-door, will be perfect.
Under the hood of the German city car a three-cylinder turbo of 100 hp with (almost) flawless reliability and which is very vigorous without being too greedy in fuel, i.e. less than 7l/100 km on average. For less than €7,000 you can even afford the high-end Titanium finish.
Seen a 1.0 100 hp Titanium from November 2013 with 125,000 km on the clock for €6,700
The 95 hp are quite sufficient to face roads and highways even with some luggage on board. In second hand, the offer in 207 is plethoric but beware of sellers who are a little too greedy. They are playing on the notoriety of the Sochaux city dweller to inflate prices. Compare ads!

Renault Clio 3
Rival of the Peugeot 207, the Clio 3 is also very present on occasion. And below the 6,000 € mark, we are starting to find restyled versions powered by the 100 hp 1.2 TCe four-cylinder block. An engine that offers more pleasure and sobriety (less than 6l/100 km on average) compared to the old four-cylinder. And in 100 hp, it is reliable.
Seen a 1.2 Tce 100 hp Expression from February 2011 with 86,700 km on the clock at €5,900
You go with family
Young children and their baby seat or booster seat, kids or teenagers… Space is essential. It is therefore preferable to turn to a family or a compact minivan.
Less popular than its rival the Peugeot 308, the compact Citroën is nonetheless a good choice. And the icing on the cake, second-hand prices are generally more attractive. Spacious, it will easily accommodate four people on board. Not to mention the trunk, whose volume (408 dm3) is one of the largest in the category.
Seen a 1.2 Puretech 110 hp from April 2015 with 90,000 km at €8,000
Launched in 2012, the Lodgy attracts more for its price/performance ratio and its seven standard seats than for its looks. If aesthetics don’t matter to you, banco. Especially since as far as reliability is concerned, it is not doing too badly, except for the recall for oil consumption. If it has been done, the reliability becomes correct again. This 1.2 115 hp block displays nice performance, since the Lodgy is quite light. On the offer side, without being bloated, the choice is there.
Seen a 1.2 TCe 115 hp Ambiance from January 2014 and 90,000 km at €7,900
Seat Altea or Altea XL
More attractive than the Dacia Lodgy, the Seat Altea, available in a long version called XL, is also offered at attractive prices. In essence, it is, among other things, powered by a 105 hp 1.2 TSI which is more robust than the old generation TSI blocks (weakness of the timing chain). And on the consumption side, it is below 7l/100 km on average.
Seen an Altea Style from January 2012 with 75,000 km at €8,000
For two with your dog or your bikes
Small or large, your dog follows you. And he needs space both for his comfort and for his safety and yours. No pet, but two bikes? Whatever your situation, aim for a minispace, MPV or station wagon.
Citroen C3 Picasso
Under its plump forms, this minispace / MPV hides an honorable habitability both for its passengers and for what one is led to load in the trunk. The large rear hatch makes it easy to access bikes or accommodate your labrador. On the engine side, the 95 hp 1.4 Vti block is quite versatile. No need to aim for the 1.6 Vti 120 hp version, generally sold more expensive and with more kilometers.
Seen a 1.4 Vti 95 hp Comfort from March 2009 with 108,000 km at €6,000
Dacia Logan MCV
If there is a compact family station wagon with a gigantic trunk volume, it is the Dacia Logan. It replaced in 2013 the MCV version with a more ”utilitarian” look. And as for second-hand prices, they are more than attractive. If the 90 hp block is perfect for urban use, this Logan will not be reluctant to venture on country roads. For the budget, however, there are more often 1.2 16v 75 hp, less dashing, but just as reliable.
Seen a 1.2 16v 75 hp Ambiance from October 2013 with 143,000 km at €6,000
Renault Clio 4 Estate
Powered by the small 90 hp 0.9l three-cylinder, the station wagon version of the Clio 4 is very versatile while preserving fuel consumption with just over 6l/100 km on average. Appeared in April 2013, it is now very present in second hand and accessible under the bar of 8,000 € and without displaying high mileage in gasoline.
Seen a 0.9 TCe 90 hp Expression from May 2013 with 65,000 km at €7,800
