Major investments ensure the future of the automotive sector in Windsor – Le Rempart

Ontario is fast becoming a leader in designing and building the cars of the future thanks to a $3.6 billion investment by Stellantis in auto manufacturing plants in Windsor and Brampton. These investments will accelerate the establishment of one of the most vertically integrated electric vehicle supply chains in North America.
“This announcement is another example that the plan to build Ontario is delivering huge gains for workers and communities across the province,” said Premier Doug Ford. Ontario has what it takes to once again become a North American auto manufacturing hub. While other governments have stood idly by watching jobs flee the province, we are taking action and ensuring the cars of the future are made in Ontario by Ontario workers. »
Stellantis will retool and upgrade its Windsor and Brampton plants to convert them into multipurpose vehicle assembly facilities powered by different energy sources to produce the electric vehicles of the future. The company will also set up two research and development centers that will focus their activities on technologies related to electric vehicles and batteries for electric vehicles. Ontario will support these important investments up to $513 million, and the federal government has committed to match this amount.
At its Windsor plant, Stellantis will build a new multi-purpose assembly line for vehicles powered by different energy sources. This strategic retooling will allow the company to diversify its capability by integrating battery electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle models into its production line to meet growing consumer demand for low-emission vehicles. Ontario has committed to invest up to $287 million in retooling the plant.
“These investments reaffirm our long-term commitment to Canada and represent an important step in our transition to zero-emission vehicles that meet the demands of our customers looking for innovative, clean, safe and affordable ways to get around, said Mark Stewart, Director of North American Operations, Stellantis. We are grateful to the provincial and federal governments for sharing with us their shared vision of building a sustainable future. We are also grateful to Unifor and our staff for their support, which will ensure the long-term viability of our operations in Canada. »
In addition, Stellantis will modernize its Automotive Research and Development Center in Windsor by expanding it and setting up two competence centers specializing in the testing of electric vehicles and battery packs. With these centers, Ontario will become a major research and development hub for Stellantis at all stages of vehicle production, from design to manufacture. In addition to conducting research and development, these centers will provide opportunities for local workers, colleges, universities and start-ups to participate in the development of Ontario’s electric vehicle ecosystem. They will play a central role in Stellantis’ research and development activities in North America and support the company’s global needs for technology, process design and product development. Ontario has committed to support this critical investment in research and development up to $94 million.
Stellantis is a pioneer in building an integrated supply chain and electric vehicle ecosystem in Ontario through its electric vehicle assembly facilities, state-of-the-art research and development assets and the manufacture of battery cells. Its recent investments, totaling $6 billion, will help transform the province’s auto industry. These include a recently announced $5 billion investment in the joint venture with LG Energy Solution, Ltd. to build Ontario’s first large-scale electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant in Windsor.
Ontario remains a prime destination for major investments due to its clean and competitive electricity system, reduced red tape and reputation as one of North America’s leading auto-producing regions.
