- Hackers managed to exploit a vulnerability in the validation node
- This hack allowed them to take 173,600 ETH and around $25.5 million in USDC from the Ronin Bridge
- The total loss amounted to $625 million
The crypto industry in general is still considered to be in its infancy, although more established projects are beginning to adopt what feels like a more stable structure.
In any case, when it comes to new areas, like DeFi, NFTs, Metaverse, and Web3 projects, a ton of them are still exceptionally liquid and untested.
Many DeFi agreements that provide for decentralized lending are trying to maintain liquidity amid a negative market, with crypto costs crashing for almost eight whole months now. Meanwhile, a ton of decentralized spans have endured efforts that have resulted in massive break-ins.
Ronin Bridge will be restarted
Recently, in March, programmers discovered how to take advantage of a weakness in the validator hub, which allowed them to siphon off 173,600 ETH and around $25.5 million in USDC from the Ronin Bridge.
Currently, Sky Mavis, the designer of a main metaverse game, Axie Infinity, has declared the decision to refund customers affected by the hack.
At the time of the hack, the complete misfortune was valued at $625 million. Either way, due to the lower cost of Ethereum, around $216.5 million will be recovered for the victims of the hack.
Sky Mavis recently discovered how to raise $150 million in April, in a round led by Binance. The organization said the assets will be used to reimburse affected customers. Currently, the perfect opportunity for customers to recover the taken assets has come, and Sky Mavis intends to hand over the assets on June 28.
Additionally, Sky Mavis also stated that the expansion will be restarted around the same time, which will require a hard fork. All validators must upgrade their product to another version to get back to work.
Aleksander Larsen, the main supporter and COO of Sky Mavis, said that the extension will be completed by the claimed client of ETH and USDC and that everything is currently progressing as planned. Validators are ready to resume engagement, and everything is going according to plan.

The hack was linked to the North Korean group Lazarus
Another rather important thing is that the personality of the group of pirates responsible for the attack has been discovered in the meantime. According to the FBI, the reliable group is the outrageous Lazarus – a North Korean hacking aggregate that has been engaged in various attacks and has been penetrating for a long time.
North Korean programmers have long focused on crypto projects, obtaining computerized resources in huge amounts.
Moreover, the current country has been attracting more and more interest in digital currency, to the point where it has even hosted crypto scholars from all over the world to hold discussions and speeches on digital currency before. It is widely believed that North Korea intends to use computer resources to evade sanctions, similar to what other vetted countries have done in the long run.
