News hardware A coffee bought, an NFT offered. Introducing Starbucks’ new loyalty program
While the majority of large companies in this world have already invested heavily in the web3 sector and its uses for several months, there are still a few laggards. Starbucks recently announced that it is embarking on the NFT adventure through a loyalty system boosted with non-fungible tokens.
Starbucks launches into NFTs
Although today the commitment around NFT is less than at the beginning of the year, several companies and large retailers continue to build projects on this new technology. In this sense, we have seen giants from various sectors such as Monoprix, GameStop and Facebook enter the world of NFTs.
This time, it’s the turn of a legendary coffee brand to put this technology to good use.
Last Monday, Starbucks officially announced the launch of a new NFT-style loyalty program. Presented in the form of a platform, “Starbucks Odyseey” is in a way an evolution of the current loyalty system “Starbucks Rewards Collection” in web3 version.
A Starbucks loyalty program boosted with NFTs
“Starbucks Rewards Collection” is a quite classic loyalty program which rewards members with stars following a purchase in a Starbucks store. These stars can then be used to get free coffee or other Starbucks products.
The new “Starbucks Odyseey” program will take up the main lines of the old system, only this new project will be based on the blockchain and non-fungible tokens (NFT). So, with this new loyalty program, fans of the Starbucks chain will be able to earn NFT stamps if they are loyal enough.
“The new Starbucks Odyssey experience will offer members the opportunity to earn and purchase digital collectible stamps (NFTs) that will unlock access to new, immersive coffee experiences,” Starbucks said in a statement.
Among the benefits of NFTs, some members will be able to:
- Access online tutorials for making an espresso martini
- Be invited to exclusive Starbucks Reserve Roasteries events
- Claim a trip to Starbucks Hacienda Alsacia Farm in Costa Rica
More than just a loyalty program, a real NFT marketplace
For its first web3 initiative, through its Starbucks Odyssey project, the American coffee brand wants to build more than just a loyalty program. In this logic, the company intends to offer an online platform dedicated to its NFTs.
The Starbucks Odyssey platform based on the Polygon network and its MATIC cryptocurrency will make it possible to buy, sell and exchange NFTs at a lower cost. For the sake of democratizing NFTs, members of the program will not need a crypto wallet but a simple bank card.
“By integrating with the Starbucks Rewards ecosystem and anchoring the experience in coffee, connection and community, we are entering the Web3 space unlike any other brand, while deepening our members’ connection to Starbucks. Our vision is to create a place where our digital community can come together over coffee, engage in immersive experiences, and celebrate the legacy and future of Starbucks. Says Rosalind Brewer, Chief Operating Officer of Starbucks.
Through this web3 project, Starbucks wants to establish itself as a pioneer in its sector. With this amazing NFT rewards program, the brand demonstrates innovative uses based on blockchain technology.
