Justice does not mess with NFTs! 5 thieves had a bad time

Flights of NFT Bored Ape between late 2021 and 2022 stirred the blockchain community for a while. The decentralized side of blockchain finance didn’t help matters, and NFT thieves managed to slip away for several months.

The crooks actually thought they were escaping the justice. Contrary to their belief, however, the Central Office for the Fight against Crime linked to Information and Communication Technologies was not going to let the theft of 5 valuable NFTs pass.

Bottom line, the office worked with a formidable investigator from the crypto community. This Sherlock from the crypto community known as ZachXBT. Yes, the vigilante managed to identify a gang of 7 crooks in this case.

Thieves summoned to court in Paris

This NFT theft story involves an estimated sum of $2.5 million. The amount stolen may even be worth more. Those responsible for this theft are young active members of the crypto community. More specifically, the band brings together the parents of one of the crooks, and 5 young people under 30 years old.

A court case is currently in the process of having the principal paid guilty of this flight. During the investigation, two of the persons presumed guilty in particular caught the attention of the investigators. These two people were temporarily detained.

How did they manage to steal these NFTs?

The part that interests us the most in these cases of theft and scam on the blockchain is the act itself. The 7 crooks who managed to steal Bored Ape NFTs acted as an organized gang according to the lead investigator on this case.

Quite easily, they lured the holders of the most valuable NFTs in the collection into their net. They lured victims with the promise of an upgrade to their NFT. The holders of these NFTs believed in a serious proposition and agreed to trade with the scammers.

The scammers in question offered victims to increase the value of their NFTs by turning them into animated virtual objects. It would be a kind of upgrade to integrate the metaverse. Of course, the victims were seduced by this very tempting offer and agreed to take doctored smart contracts.

It was through this exchange that the crooks managed to steal the Bored Ape NFTs from the victims.

The lesson to be learned from this case

This case of cryptocurrency theft makes us understand that the blockchain is still at a very young stage of its existence. The pitfalls on the network are numerous and it is up to users to take all precautions.

It is not only necessary to be cautious with respect to potential investments, but also with respect to the services relating to the assets. Indeed, the non-traceability of transactions on the blockchain creates flaws in the system. Vigilance is required for all users.

In short, the crypto community is not yet completely safe ground. On the other hand, users always have the possibility of protecting themselves and possibly recovering their assets in the event of theft.
