Mastercard files 15 trademark applications related to NFTs and the Metaverse

According to a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Mastercard intends to provide payments for virtual spaces. The international payment service provider has just made 15 trademark applications to protect its future offers intended to facilitate transactions in the metaverse. Details in the following.

In addition to a virtual version of its basic services, Mastercard also has the ambition tohost its customers in its own virtual environments. In the filing submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office, the company clarified that users will be able to connect and interact with it for recreational, educational, shopping, leisure or entertainment purposes. As a result, Mastercard has decided to file 15 trademark applications related to non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

With the creation of these virtual spaces, Mastercard also wants to create an online marketplace for consumers of NFT-authenticated digital goods and media. A full list of Metaverse and NFT-related trademark applications filed by Mastercard was shared in a tweet by USPTO Trademark Attorney Mike Kondoudis. They also include of applications filed for the Mastercard brand name, its slogan Priceless and the iconic circles logo in virtual space.

Long before Mastercard, several companies offering online payment services signaled their interest in the Metaverse by filing trademarks with the USPTO. This is particularly the case of the great rival VISA which filed a patent application in 2020 to create a digital currency.

At the same time, American Express filed seven requests related to establishing a presence in the metaverse. This was in particular about building a brand with virtual payment cardsconcierge services in virtual environments as well as the activation of payments on NFT marketplaces.

With crypto investors’ growing interest in the metaverse, payment service providers like Mastercard are expected to get more involved in the industry. Earlier this year, the company had already partnered with cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase to facilitate the purchase of NFTs.
