Ubisoft – The gaming giant is backtracking with NFTs – CryptoActu

The collision that took place last year between the gaming sector and NFTs continues to divide in the camp of the gamers. However, this meeting has everything logical and natural if we consider the specificity of these two digital universes. This in the form ofa real economy of virtual worlds driven by cryptocurrencies and technology blockchain. And a whole new property of digital objects definitely to the advantage of players. However, a significant proportion of the latter rejects this change already underway. Reason why the French giant Ubisoft seems to backtrack, stating that Web3 technology integrations are only at the “research” stage.

The video game sector has had a very intense year 2021 in terms of digital innovations. With the emergence of play to earn and the appearance of NFT tokens in its virtual worlds. All this accompanied byan economic impact with effective consequences in the real world, in the form of earnings sometimes equivalent to a salary. A paradigm shift arrived with the delicacy of the cryptocurrency bull market, like a player of Fortnite in a part ofAnimal Crossing. And that’s the tragedy…

Because the bear market has undeniably been there. With this feature to offer opponents of this type of development the justification of their arguments : NFT tokens are risky, speculative and useless. And the impossibility for the companies having decided to plunge into the bath to continue to fight against this tendency more hateful than widespread. With the final consequence, a reversal triggered by the Ubisoft studio which nevertheless announced last October that it wanted to “be one of the key players in this sector”. But that was before !

Ubisoft – NFTs are in “research mode”

I have to say that Ubisoft’s entry into the NFT token space was not a huge success. This follows the launch of its Quartz platform at the end of last year. A project supposed to bring a control tower to the integration of digital objects – “ digits – in his virtual worlds. While “putting back into their (players’) hands the value they generate by playing, with the items they buy or the content they create online”.

A breakthrough that has made Ubisoft one of the first AAA-rated companies to get involved in this transition to blockchain technology. But, according to the recent mea culpa of its CEO Yves Guillemot in the columns of the site gamesindustry.biz, “we were probably not good at saying that we were doing research”. Because obviously, the trend is currently in reverse. And the company’s communication focused on a demotion of NFTs to the simple rank of “research”. Because, still according to Yves Guillemot, “Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t”. Or more exactly: sometimes it takes, sometimes it doesn’t…

Metavers – 52% of gamers think this technology will change the video game industry

Not everyone sees the arrival of cryptocurrencies […]

We really look at all the new technologies. We are very much on the cloud, on the new generation of voxels, and we are looking at all the capabilities of Web3. We recently tested a few things that give us more information on how it can be used and what we should do in the world of video games. We therefore test games in the field, and we will see if they really meet the needs of the players. But we’re still in search mode. »

NFT – The Environmental Impact Spectrum

And, once again, the environmental “problem” of NFTs seems to be at the center of this decision. While Ubisoft has rightly chosen to the Tezos blockchain (XTZ) renowned for its thrifty nature in the field. Because, as Yves Guillemot explains, it “consumes less energy per transaction than sending e-mails”. But it doesn’t matter, because those who don’t know what they’re talking about see non-fungible tokens as digital objects that inevitably rely on a Proof of Work type network. And that even then that Ethereum is abandoning this model for a much less energy-consuming Proof of Stake.

Are NFTs becoming the real failover technology […]

Exploring does not mean getting started. This industry is changing rapidly and it is very cautious about the impact it will have. Like so many things, at first it’s not as good as it could be, but like other new technologies, they will find their way.

It therefore seems that Ubisoft is backtracking on its recent advances, under pressure from its players. With arguments often erroneous or fantasized by them vis-à-vis what NFT tokens or blockchain technology really are. Even if, it must be admitted, mistrust can be legitimate as to a possible speculative changeover of certain models of play to earn. But even on this point, the game Axie Infinity (AXS) has taken recent steps to switch to a model play AND earn. This is why the conclusion of this article belongs to Nicolas Pouard, vice-president of the Strategic Innovations Lab at Ubisoft, who explained last January:

I think gamers don’t understand what a digital secondary market can do for them. »
